What is puja?

As exercises keep our bodies healthy and free from disease, as yoga keeps the flow of our vital energy in good condition, puja is a ritual performed to keep us in harmony with the cosmic forces, thereby removing and overcoming the sorrows of life and bringing spiritual advancement.

Can everyone perform puja?

Yes, In fact, in olden days, it was the duty of all householders to perform daily puja. Pujas can be broadly classified into three groups: vedic, tantric and general. The general form of puja can be performed by anyone as part of one's daily routine. The vedic and tantric forms of puja can be studied and practiced only under the guidance of a competent acharya (teacher).

What is homa?

Homa, the sacrificial fire ceremony, is another important devotional practice. During the homa we offer a lot of materials into the fire. These materials are symbolc of our thoughts and emotions.

How can I do puja ?

The Sani Puja, Rahu Puja and Mangal Puja, which are done only at the Brahmasthanam temples, require your physical presence and participation.
In the event of your not being able to attend physically you should depute someone who will perform the puja on your behalf.
For all the other pujas your presence is required for maximum benefit,
but not mandatory.

Can we do puja on behalf of someone else?

Definitely, if you have a karmic relation with them; i.e., if the person is related to you by blood or marriage or long-standing close friendship. As a father earns and deposits money on behalf of his son, we can give the name (and star, if known) of the person on whose behalf we do the puja, at the time of registration, to help the priest to do the necessary sankalpa. At the start of the puja, we should mentally make a resolve that the fruit of this puja should reach that person. During the puja we need not think about or visualise the person.
